What Are Side Lit Letters?
Side lit letters are a type of 3D illuminated signage designed to create a glowing edge effect rather than a fully lit front face. They usually feature an opaque front surface and a translucent or partially translucent letter body, with LED modules installed inside to illuminate the side edges of the letters. The result is a clean, dimensional look that stands out both day and night.
Side lit channel letters are widely used for storefronts, retail shops, business buildings, commercial interiors, and exterior signage. Because each letter is individually fabricated, they can be customized in size, color, material, and lighting style to match different branding needs.
How Side Lit Letters Work?
The lighting principle of side lit letters is simple:
the LED light is installed inside the letter shell, and the light is transmitted through the side or edge area of the acrylic structure. Instead of shining directly through the front face, the light escapes from the border, creating a strong outline and a modern glowing effect.
This lighting style gives the letters a bold three-dimensional appearance. It also makes the sign visually attractive without relying on a fully illuminated front panel.
Full Side Lit vs Half Side Lit Letters
Side lit letters can be divided into two common structural styles: full side lit and half side lit.
Full Side Lit Letters
Full side lit letters are primarily constructed with a translucent acrylic base shell, covered by a thin, opaque metal sheet on the front. Therefore, the entire acrylic base is illuminated, resulting in a larger and brighter light source. However, a drawback is that the shadows from the LEDs are more easily visible, making the sign less visually appealing up close compared to half side lit letters. Nevertheless, the manufacturing process is simpler, and the price and cost are relatively lower, giving it a significant price advantage, as shown in the image below:

Half Side Lit Letters
Half side lit letters is composed of half translucent acrylic lettering and the other half opaque letter shell. Under the halo effect of the half side lit letters, the lines and outlines of the lettering are clearly defined and prominent, attracting attention both day and night. Upon closer inspection, it is exquisitely detailed, resembling a work of art, as shown in the image below:

Note: Half side lit letters are in between full side lit letters and halo lit letters. Their boundaries are sometimes not so clear, so it depends on the customer’s needs. This classification is for reference only.
What Are Halo Lit Letters?
Halo lit letters are also known as reverse lit letters or backlit letters. Unlike side lit letters, halo lit letters use a metal face and are mounted slightly away from the wall so that the light shines backward onto the wall surface. This creates a soft halo glow around each letter.
The main visual difference is that halo lit letters focus on the light reflection on the wall, while side lit letters focus on the illuminated edge of the letter itself. Halo lit signs usually feel softer, warmer, and more elegant, while side lit signs feel sharper, brighter, and more dimensional.

Side Lit Letters vs Halo Lit Letters
If we only look at the appearance, the main difference is that side lit letter uses a solid non-luminous front surface, which is attached to the acrylic letters shell, while the halo lit letter uses a fabricated metal letters shell, and the acrylic-back panel is half-buried in the metal character casing. As shown in the figure below:

In addition to this, the difference between side lit letters and halo lit letters also lies in the light direction and the visual effect.
Side lit letters use an opaque front face with translucent side or edge areas, so the light comes through the letter body itself. Halo lit letters use a metal face and project light onto the wall behind the sign, creating a glowing outline around the letter.
In other words, side lit letters emphasize the sign’s own shape, while halo lit letters emphasize the glow around the sign. If you want a stronger edge glow and a more modern appearance, side lit letters are a great option. If you want a softer and more premium ambient effect, halo lit letters may be a better fit.
Side Lit Letters Structure
A typical side lit letter structure includes four main parts:
- Opaque front face: Usually made of metal or black acrylic.
- Translucent side wall: Usually made of acrylic, which allows light to pass through.
- LED modules or LED strips: Installed inside the letter to provide illumination.
- Back panel: Usually made of opaque metal to close the structure and support mounting.
This construction allows the letter to stay visually solid from the front while still producing a glowing edge effect.
Its structural diagram is shown below:

How Side Lit Letters Are Made
The manufacturing process usually follows these steps:
- Cut the acrylic and metal materials into the required letter shape.
- Form the front face and side wall structure.
- Install the LED modules inside the letter shell.
- Seal the back panel and test the lighting output.
- Finish the surface and prepare the sign for installation.
Because each letter is individually fabricated, side lit letters can be customized for many different business applications.
